popup.description1
Investigate the genetic structure of turkeys of Ukrainian selection by quantitative loci and determine the features of their relationship with the level of manifestation of polygenic traits over several generations
popup.description2
The object of the study was the genetic structure of quantitative and qualitative traits and the relationships between them in poultry of Ukrainian breeding under conditions of conservation and rational use. The aim was to monitor the national gene pool of agricultural poultry based on economically valuable traits and to investigate patterns of genetic structure formation in poultry of Ukrainian breeding with respect to quantitative and qualitative traits in phylogenesis.
Genetic (PCR-RFLP), zootechnical, morphometric, hybridological, economic, and systems analysis methods were applied.
Regularities in the formation of the genetic structure of plumage colour in phylogenesis were established, and directions for the consolidation of small populations by quantitative traits were identified. Assessment of plumage colour genotypes allowed the determination of clear genetic formulas for males and females in five chicken populations. Morphometric analysis (mean number of phenotypes, µ) confirmed a tendency toward consolidation of newly created genetic material.
It was shown that the genetic structure of small populations by quantitative traits was formed under the influence of artificial selection for plumage colour and negative paratypic factors, including those related to military actions in Ukraine. A positive correlation between consolidation by plumage colour and productivity was revealed (r = 0.58).
The next generation of chickens and turkeys of Ukrainian breeding maintained in the gene pool herd at the experimental farm “Conservation of the State Poultry Gene Pool” of the SPRS LFI NAAS was preserved and reproduced. Evaluation of gene pool groups showed minimum live body weight in egg–meat breeds (1.7–1.8 kg at 52 weeks) with egg production of 58.9–61.3 eggs, and maximum live body weight (up to 2.7 kg) and egg production (73.35 eggs) in meat–egg populations. Egg weight ranged from 55.7 to 62.7 g.
