The use of such traction systems reduces fuel and energy costs and harmful emissions into the environment. This is achieved both because energy from a stationary source has a lower cost per kilowatt-hour and because energy is accumulated during electrodynamic braking and used to power the traction electric drive and auxiliary systems. This approach improves the overall energy efficiency of rolling stock in various operating modes. Methods for creating and applying plug-in hybrid traction systems for electric and autonomous rolling stock for various purposes are considered. The determination of the parameters of plug-in energy storage devices and the selection of cell types for them are justified, taking into account the requirements for energy capacity, power, mass and size indicators, and operating conditions. The results obtained can be used in the design and modernization of promising traction rolling stock. Energy management strategies in hybrid traction systems of rail rolling stock are considered and analyzed. To determine the source from which the traction system should be powered, the use of the concept of “equivalent specific fuel consumption” is proposed. The results obtained in this work can be used when upgrading the rolling stock of mainline and industrial railways. This will improve their traction and energy performance, reduce fuel and energy consumption, and reduce the harmful impact on the environment through the rational selection of energy sources and modes of use.
