The work considers new approaches to neuroprotection, in particular the use of probiotics and microbiota metabolites. The potential effectiveness of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus casei as an in vivo neuroprotective agent has been established. In vitro data confirm that lactobacterial metabolic products and sodium butyrate increase the resistance of nerve cells to OGD- and LPS-induced damage. In the in vitro model, the ability of oligodendrocytes derived from human neuroepithelial stem cells to myelinate human neuronal axons after their transplantation into an organotypic culture of the cerebral cortex was demonstrated, indicating their functional integration and regenerative potential for restoring the recipient’s myelin structures. In a hemiparkinsonism model, the spatial organization of rotenone-induced astrogliosis in the rat substantia nigra was analyzed. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that increased proliferative activity of astrocytes is localized in areas of degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, indicating close spatial and functional interactions between glial cells and neurons undergoing toxic damage.
