popup.description1
To reveal the mechanisms shaping the structure of aquatic organisms’ metacommunities in water-bodies of different types on the grounds of studying the specifics of spatial and temporal dynamics and interactions of free-living and symbiotic components of local planktonic and benthic communities depending on key environmental factors (hydromorphological, hydrological and hydrochemical variables, the degree of isolation / connection, human impact, biotic interactions).
popup.description2
Within the research framework of the spatial-temporal dynamics of hydrobionts in the Kaniv Reservoir and its adjacent water bodies, a comprehensive analysis of the biotic community structure was conducted from the perspective of meta-community theory. Using a mechanistic approach, it was established that the formation of the species composition of local communities is determined by a combination of four key paradigms: “patch dynamics,” “species sorting,” “mass effect,” and “neutral model.”
The use of structural analysis (assessment of coherence, species turnover, and boundary clumping) allowed us to identify certain types of metacommunity structures in the studied biota: phytoplankton, phytoepiphyton, and mollusk symbionts form Clementesian or Quasi-Clementesian structures with discrete boundaries, while macrozoobenthos and zoophytes demonstrate Quasi-Gleasonian structures with individualistic species responses to ecological gradients.
Correlation, dispersion, and regression analyses of ordinated matrices showed that the spatial distribution of phytoplankton species is significantly influenced by abiotic factors, as well as the combined influence of spatial and abiotic factors. A significant influence of spatial and abiotic factors was established separately for the phytoepiphyton, and only spatial factors for the microphytobenthos. A significant influence of abiotic factors was established for symbiotic organisms.
