popup.description1
Development of oxide scintillation crystals based on (Y,Gd,Lu)AlO3 perovskites with accelerated run up times and decay of scintillations for detecting ionizing particles in high-energy physics experiments at colliders and in medical tomography.
popup.description2
The report presents the results of the second stage of research aimed at improving the technology for growing YAlO₃:Ce and GdYAlO₃:Ce crystals. The thermal graphite components of the chamber were modernized and the use of tungsten crucibles was justified, which improved the quality of the grown crystals. The crystals were obtained by the Czochralski method from a melt in an argon atmosphere using seeds cut from samples from the first stage. The grown crystals were up to 70 mm long and up to 14 mm in diameter and were characterized by the absence of cracks and a smooth surface. To reduce thermal stresses, the method of “freezing” crystals in the melt residue was used, and its advantages and disadvantages were analyzed. It was found that growing in a reducing atmosphere leads to the formation of F-centers, which causes a dark brown color of the crystals and a deterioration in their optical properties. In order to eliminate oxygen vacancies, thermal annealing was carried out in an air atmosphere; it was shown that the optimal conditions for YAP:Ce crystals are 1400 °C for 48 hours. Spectral studies of excitation, luminescence, and X-ray luminescence confirmed a decrease in the concentration of F-centers after annealing and a significant (more than twofold) increase in luminescence intensity. The results obtained indicate an improvement in the optical and scintillation properties of YAP:Ce crystals and the promise of the proposed technological solutions.
