Obtaining new knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of the sheep breeds' biodiversity formation and types under the influence of the selection and breeding work. popup.description2 The features of STR locus polymorphism were investigated in Askanian Karakul (AKP), Askanian Fine-Fleeced (AFP), and Askanian Meat-and-Wool (AMWP) sheep breeds. In total, 34 alleles were identified across five microsatellite loci (OarFCB20, INRA172, INRA063, MAF214, CSRD247) in the studied populations of Askanian-bred sheep. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 (OarFCB20) to 9 (MAF214), indicating a high level of polymorphism of these markers. All analyzed microsatellite loci were polymorphic. The loci INRA172, INRA063, and MAF214 proved to be the most informative for breed differentiation and can be recommended for further genetic certification and animal identification. For a more in-depth assessment of the genetic structure of populations, it is advisable to expand the marker panel by including additional STR loci and to increase the number of animals studied from different production types. Analysis of the experimental data indicates the distinctiveness of the genetic profiles of the studied populations based on microsatellite data, with significant differences observed among them. The Askanian Karakul and Askanian Fine-Fleeced breeds were the most genetically related, whereas the Askanian Meat-and-Wool breed formed a separate, independent genetic subcluster; however, within the Askanian-bred sheep, it retains common elements of the shared gene pool. Recommendations for microsatellite typing and determination of allele pools of domestically bred sheep populations have been developed.
