Research report: 79 pages, 3 sections, 22 figures and 7 tables. Keywords: household waste, separate collection, sorting, waste management, incentive mechanisms, local self-government. The research work is devoted to the analysis of the current state of household waste management by the population and the identification of effective mechanisms for increasing the level of separate collection in the household waste management system. The relevance of the study is due to the implementation of the waste management reform initiated by the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” (2022), and the need to involve the population in fulfilling the requirements of this legislation.
The object of the study is the household waste management system at the local level. The subject of the study is the state of household waste management by the population, in particular the practice of sorting it, as well as educational, informational and economic mechanisms for increasing the level of separate collection.
The work uses general scientific, empirical and mathematical-statistical research methods.
The results of the study revealed a significant gap between the population's environmental awareness and the actual practice of sorting household waste. Differences in the level of involvement in sorting between urban and rural residents were identified.
The feasibility of using an integrated approach to increasing the level of sorting, combining infrastructure development, systematic educational and information measures, as well as economic incentives, was substantiated. The results of the study can be used by local governments in developing local waste management plans and improving the practice of involving the population in separate collection of household waste.
