Among explosives, nitroaromatic compounds are among the most common. Currently, there is an urgent need in Ukraine to find fast, cheap, sensitive methods for detecting explosives to detect environmental pollution caused by them. The goal of this project is to design, synthesize, and study the photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal properties of new organic donor-acceptor emitters that can exhibit solid-state enhanced luminescence (SSLE), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) for optical detection of nitroaromatic explosives. The main objectives of the project are: 1) Design and theoretical analysis of donor-acceptor type emitter structures that potentially exhibit both SSLE and long-lived radiation. 2) Synthesis and identification of the newly designed most promising emitters containing phenoxazine, phenothiazine, dimethylacridine, etc. as electron-donating moieties and 1,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene, 2,3-diphenylpyrazine, etc., as acceptors. 3) Investigation of thermal, electrochemical, photophysical properties of synthesized organic emitters and comparison with similar known emitters used in nitroaromatic explosives sensors. 4) Estimation of the applicability of the compounds for sensing nitroaromatic complex explosives and creation of a sensor. The main idea is to create an explosives sensor, the prototype of which will be a two-component matrix compound/impurity system, where a newly developed and synthesized compound that exhibits thermally activated delayed fluorescence will be used as the matrix, and a compound similar in energy structure to a nitroaromatic explosive will be used as the impurity.
