popup.description1
The aim of the research is to select, analyse and systematize the existing effective traditional and modern approaches and methods of forming foreign language competence of students in a multicultural environment, and thus adapt them to the conditions of modern learning.
popup.description2
The study systematised the theoretical and methodological principles of forming foreign language competence on the basis of the competence-based, communicative, activity-based, learner-centred and intercultural approaches; drawing on the concept of high-context and low-context communication cultures, it classified the cultural, verbal and non-verbal differences of representatives of various cultural groups; it substantiated the principles of selecting and structuring learning material; and it developed a three-stage model of competence formation (preparatory-orientation, structural-communicative and final stages) together with a set of lexical, grammatical, communicative, intercultural and situational exercises. The effectiveness of the methodology was confirmed by a pedagogical experiment: 34.8 % of students in the experimental groups reached a high level of competence compared with 16.4 % in the control groups, while the low level accounted for 3.3 % versus 10.8 %; the differences are statistically significant (p < 0.05). Methodological recommendations for improving the foreign language training of medical students were developed. The results can be used in designing educational programmes and teaching materials, in postgraduate education and in teacher professional development.
