popup.description1
Development of oxide scintillation crystals based on (Y,Gd,Lu)AlO3 perovskites with accelerated run up times and decay of scintillations for detecting ionizing particles in high-energy physics experiments at colliders and in medical tomography.
popup.description2
Within the framework of the research project, a comprehensive study of Ce-doped YAlO₃ and mixed Y–Gd and Y–Lu aluminum perovskite crystals grown by the Czochralski method from tungsten crucibles in a reducing Ar+CO atmosphere was carried out. YAlO₃:Ce, Y₀․₅Gd₀․₅AlO₃:Ce, and Y₀․₉Lu₀․₁AlO₃:Ce crystals were obtained and their structural, optical, luminescence, and scintillation properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the orthorhombic perovskite structure of YAlO₃ is preserved after partial substitution of Y³⁺ by Gd³⁺ and Lu³⁺ ions. Systematic changes in the unit-cell parameters depending on the ionic radius of the substituting cation were established. It was demonstrated that cation substitution significantly affects the incorporation of Ce activator ions into the crystal lattice. The effective Ce segregation coefficient in the mixed crystals was found to be 30–50% higher than in YAP:Ce, which is potentially beneficial for improving the uniformity of scintillation properties throughout the crystal volume. The influence of matrix composition on optical absorption and Ce³⁺ luminescence spectra was established. The introduction of Gd and Lu results in spectral shifts of the emission band and modifies the optical absorption characteristics. The highest light output, 16,201 photons/MeV, was obtained for YAP:Ce. LuYAP:Ce exhibited the shortest effective scintillation decay time of 20.7 ns, whereas GdYAP:Ce demonstrated a very fast scintillation rise time of 78 ps. The obtained results confirm the potential of mixed Ce-doped aluminum perovskites as fast scintillation materials for ionizing-radiation detectors. The use of tungsten crucibles was also shown to be a technologically promising alternative to expensive iridium crucibles. The obtained experimental data were summarized and a scientific article was prepared for publication.
