For the first time, a historical-economic rationale is proposed for the emergence of "crony capitalism" as a consequence of the transformation of the institutional legacy during the liberalization of the economic environment in Ukraine. Specifically, the concentration of economic and political power within a narrow circle of financial-industrial groups is explained by the prior trajectory of a system characterized by restricted access to resources and opportunities, the operation of the law of socialist accumulation, and the concentration of assets in the hands of the party-economic *nomenklatura*. Furthermore, a qualitatively new historical-institutional methodological approach—novel within Ukrainian academic literature—is developed for studying the formation of the economic system over a century-long period; this approach integrates historical-logical deconstruction with an evolutionary, integrative perspective.
