(The present article dwells on the main approaches to the definition of «stereotype» in different fields of knowledge since its introduction to the social sciences. The article gives an overview of scientists who investigated the problem of stereotypes. The paper focuses on basic characteristics and functional peculiarities of different types of stereotypes. The stereotypes are closely connected with the process of stereotypization. The special attention is given to the classes of stereotypes: social stereotypes, family stereotypes, personal stereotypes, gender stereotypes and age stereotypes. Social stereotypes are formed by society, family stereotypes appear according to the traditions or rules in the family, personal stereotypes are formed by person. The basic functions of stereotypes are characterized and analyzed. The article outlines that the source of the formation of stereotypes is either our life experience or state rules or norms.
