Description
The paper examines the specifics of audiovisual translation with a focus on dubbing as one of its most complex yet highly effective forms. The relevance of the topic is determined by the rapid development of digital technologies, the globalization of the media space and the growing role of translation transformations in the process of intercultural communication. Particular attention is paid to the necessity of adapting linguistic material while taking into account the temporal and technical constraints inherent in audiovisual products.
The theoretical and methodological framework of the study is based on the works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars in the fields of translation studies, linguoculturology, audiovisual translation. The paper clarifies the concept of translation, examines the notions of equivalence and adequacy and defines audiovisual translation as a multimodal phenomenon that combines verbal and non-verbal channels of communication. Film translation is analyzed separately as a polysemiotic complex in which the translator acts as a mediator between cultures, reproducing not only the content but also the emotional and aesthetic impact of the original.
The paper provides a detailed characterization of the main types of audiovisual translation – subtitling, dubbing, and voice-over translation outlining their advantages, disadvantages, areas of application. Special emphasis is placed on dubbing as the most accessible form of translation for the audience, which requires a high level of linguistic, stylistic, and phonetic adaptation, as well as strict adherence to synchronization principles.
The practical part of the study is devoted to the analysis of the Ukrainian dubbing of the animated film Shrek. Lexical and semantic translation transformations are examined, including the choice of variant equivalents, contextual substitution, antonymic translation, calquing and descriptive translation. The findings show that translators most frequently employ variant translation and contextual substitutions in order to preserve humor, stylistic features, and the naturalness of speech. The analysis demonstrates a high level of adaptation of cultural realia and comic effects, which ensures an equivalent impact of the translated text on the Ukrainian audience.
The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of applying its results in the educational process and in further research on audiovisual translation, particularly in the fields of dubbing, humor, and translation transformations.
