Description
According to the results of the surveys conducted in 2023 at Agro Flora LLC of the Kharkiv district of the Kharkiv region, nine types of pests were registered on Cossack and Chinese junipers. Seven species damaged the needles and branches: the common spider mite, the Oregon flat-body mite, the juniper aphid, the European juniper scale, the juniper mealybug, the juniper moth, the common juniper weevil and the marble beetle, and two species damaged the root system: these beetles (may and marble) . Five species are sucking pests, four species have a biting mouthparts. The dominant species were the juniper moth, the European juniper scale and the juniper mealybug. It was established that in most cases, the caterpillars of the 5th age of the juniper moth hibernate in cobweb nests among damaged needles. In the spring of 16.04, at a sum of effective temperatures of 60.8 °С (the lower threshold of development is 6 °С), the awakening of caterpillars began. At the sum of the effective temperatures of 147.2 °С, pupation began on 28.04. On 13.05, the first butterflies were observed at a total effective temperature of 296.0 °C. The beginning of the mass flight began in the third decade of May (21.05) with a sum of effective temperatures of 402.1 °С. Males fly a little earlier than females. Egg laying began on 23.05 at a total effective temperature of 432.3 °С. The revival of caterpillars was noted on 12.06 at a total effective temperature of 772.3 °С. The appearance of nests with caterpillars was noted on 17.06. The presence of juniper moth caterpillars is detected by the formed fuzzy nests, in which from 1 to 65 caterpillars can feed, weaving up to 10 branches. There can be more than 5 small nests or one large one per 10 cm of a juniper branch. One IV-V instar caterpillar damages 5 to 15 conifers, sometimes more. On a juniper with a high density of juniper moth nests, the needles recover poorly and very slowly. On most plants, the formation of nests from year to year proceeds in the direction from the base to the top of the bush in continuous plexuses. When examining juniper trees for damage by the juniper moth, it was established that 39 plants out of 200 plants were damaged, or 19.5%. The average damage score was 0.195. However, despite the low indicator, chemical protection of plantations was carried out due to the high potential danger of this pest. It was established that the population density of juniper moth caterpillars on plants without treatment slightly decreased due to natural mortality from 14.2 to 13.9 individuals. per bush, and after treatment with the drug Nurell D, 55% k.e. by spraying, it began to decrease from 14.2 to 0.6 eks. per bush and on the 14th day, the average technical efficiency was 95.8%. Considering the fact that the pest develops in 1 generation per year, spraying is an effective way of controlling the number of the pest. The juniper mealybug appeared on the Chinese juniper in the second decade of June, the number of the worm grew and after a month it increased almost four times. Its harmfulness is expressed in the reduction of decorativeness, namely the discoloration of needles, drying of needles and branches. The density of the population of the juniper mealybug on plants without spraying increased during the growing season, and after treatment with the insecticide Nurell D, 55% k.e. by spraying, it began to decrease, the average technical efficiency was 70%. When using the insecticide Nurell D, 55% with a consumption rate of 7 ml per 10 liters of water, the resulting increase in the form of saved UAH 160 per bush. Additional conditional net profit was UAH 117.25. The payback of additional costs was UAH 3.74 with a profitability of 274%. The European juniper scale appeared in May, its number on junipers in 2023 increased rapidly from May to August and in August reached maximum values - 45 specimens/10 cm of branch. The population of Cossack juniper with the European juniper scale is less in single plantings, because the conditions for the development of the pest are less favorable than in group plantings, namely: better ventilation, lighting. Technical efficiency of protection against the European juniper scale by the method of soil application of Aktara insecticide, 25% v.g. was 86.7% on the 14th day after spraying. Carrying out protection measures provides an increase in the form of saved UAH 260 per bush. Additional conditional net profit was UAH 135,455. Payback of additional costs was UAH 2.09. The profitability was 108.76%.
