The case of a small undeformed chip thickness was considered. The unsteady-state cutting process classification was developed and the conception of basic machining operation (skiving) and generalized one (skiving in combination with rotary principle of machining) which takes into account most of conventional machining operation features were formulated based on the research results. Using slip-line method the predictive analytical model of the basic machining operation was elaborated and its experimental validation was carried out. The examples of the model application for selection of design parameters of rotary type skiving machines were considered. The comprehensive experimental investigation of the basic machining operation including coated tool workability in the condition of the operation were also carried out and practical recommendations were developed.
