It focused on the investigation of the origin, a political devolopment, social relations, a cultural life, a cultural transmission of Halicia-Volhynian traditions and its influence on the later Ukrainian culture and political thought. The department has produced comprehensive encyclopedic articles about archeological and written (narrative and documentary) sources, about towns and villages, about persons mentioned in the sources and their genealogies. The department also has prepared a bibliographical reference articles about scholars who studied a history of the Principality.
