Sequential and parallel algorithms (multistart combined with a modification of the r-algorithm) have been developed to find the best feasible solution to the balanced sparse packing problems of spherical objects into spherical and cubic containers. 3. The connection between the problems of finding a balanced sparse packing of balls of different radii with the problems of a balanced sparse packing of spherical cavities is studied. 4. An MPI-implementation of a parallel algorithm for sparse balanced packing of circles has been developed and its efficiency has been investigated on the SKIT computer complex.
