Despite their limited sovereignty, they played a key role in Eastern Europe because of their strategically advantageous natural and geographical location. For example, under the rule of the Golden Horde, Ukrainian lands were used to protect the Horde from the north and, of course, as a springboard for aggression to the north; it is proved that with the arrival of Gediminovych, Ukraine-Rus’ has already become a shield of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the steppe; It was noted that representatives of the new ruling dynasty, through bribery, various supports, family ties, flexible religious policies, took control of almost all former Ruryk principalities in the east, and created several allied-dependent territorial enclaves within the Golden Horde. And some of them will eventually become separate states.
