The object of the study is dystrophic retinal diseases in 1,000 people who applied to participate in the works at the Shelter facility or participated in the works at the Shelter facility in the period 2007-2017. The purpose of the study is evaluate the possibility of using the accumulated databases of ophthalmological examinations for the period 2007-2017 of persons who worked in contact with sources of ionizing radiation, to determine the frequency of age-related macular degeneration and evaluate the effectiveness of prevention measures. Research methods: epidemiological, ophthalmological, mathematical and statistical. Results. Age-related macular degeneration is a major cause of blindness in the industrialized world. Studies following the Chornobyl disaster have shown that age-related macular degeneration is the most common type of retinal pathology in people exposed to radiation. Large-scale epidemiological studies of the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration have been conducted in developed and developing countries. It is shown, that to assess the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration in Ukraine can be used data from previous surveys of persons who applied to participate in work in conditions impact of ionizing radiation. The prevalence of age-related macular degeneration, determined in the pilot group in non-irradiated people, was quite high and amounted to 196.4 per 1,000 people. The analysis of relative risks for different age groups showed an increase in the risk of developing AMD with age. The results of long-term follow-up showed the effectiveness of the lutein, zeaxanthin and resveratrol complex for the treatment of early stage macular degeneration in persons working under constant exposure to ionizing radiation in low doses.
