The object of research is the patterns of microstructure formation, phase composition, metastability of austenite, mechanical and operational properties of a wide range of structural and tool steels under the influence of surface and volume treatment. Research methods: optical microscopy, electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray structural analysis, microhardness measurement, tribological tests. The work solves the actual scientific and technical problem of increasing the complex of mechanical and tribological properties of functional materials due to the formation of metastable structural states. The regularities of the realization of physical phenomena and phase-structural transformations that develop during the exploitation of intellectual materials, which ensure the formation of their physical-mechanical and operational properties, are summarized. Technological processes of creating metastable states with an increased level of operational properties in alloys have been developed.
