The purpose of the work is to investigate the phenomenon of the historical development of Australia in the ХХth century, to study the patterns of formation and evolution of it as a federal state, to analyze the main stages of the ascent, which characterize the features and specifics of Australia's development.
As a result of the study, the early stages of the continent's development, geopolitical processes in Europe during the era of imperialism (XIX-XX centuries) were conceptually substantiated; the stages of establishing the Australian Union as an independent state were highlighted; the formation of the institution of trade unions of Australia was investigated; the fundamental principles of Australia's participation in international organizations of the Indo-Pacific region were revealed; the concept of the state of "general welfare" was investigated and the specifics of its implementation in Australia were determined; the main factors of the effective development of the national economy of Australia and the transition to the post-industrial development model were revealed; the successful experience of development, transformation and improvement of Australian higher education in the XXth century is were summarized; the strategies, principles and means of organizing social and cultural life in Australia in the XXth century were substantiated; the development of Australian literature in the formation of the state of Australia was analyzed; the Australian media were studied as an example of an important driving force and a practical tool for the successful transformation of the multi-ethnic population of Australia into a single Australian nation; the first in Ukraine complex scientific interdisciplinary study on the history of the development of Australian cinema in the XXth century was carried out; the reasons for the formation of Australia's environmental problems were clarified, which included the specifics of the natural and climatic potential.
