A comparative analysis of existing containers for storing radioactive waste and nuclear materials was carried out. Safety criteria for the handling and storage of fuel-containing materials in containers have been defined. Neutron-physical models were developed and calculations were carried out to determine the characteristics of fuel-containing materials. A mathematical model of a protective container for temporary reliable storage of corium has been developed. The calculation of the protective characteristics and optimal parameters of the container was carried out. The selection of effective materials for the biological protection of the container is substantiated. Recommendations have been developed for the fulfillment of state and international radiation safety requirements for long-term storage of highly active radioactive waste. The results of the scientific project were implemented in Alpha Atom LLC, Chornobyl State Environmental Academy of Postgraduate Education and Management Science Park, Ukrainian Atomic Devices and Systems Corporation, and the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy Conservation and Energy Management of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute named after Ihor Sikorsky".
