Their biological activity was studied in the test system of pBR322 plasmid DNA relaxation by topoisomerase I. 4,9-Disubstituted acridines were found to inhibit the enzyme at low micromolar concentrations. 6 compounds with IC50 values below 15 uM were identified, including highly active inhibitors with IC50 of 3,2 and 2,5 uM.
