To improve the immunocytochemical methods for diagnosing acute myelogenous and acute lymphoid leukemias, the Mab panels have been selected allowing for detecting blast cells at the various differentiation stages. The elaborated Mab panels applied in diagnosing 85 acute leukemia cases made it possible to delineate 8 AML variants as well as ALL subvariants taking into account their specific expression patterns. Moreover, the following rare cases of the acute leukemias were diagnosed: two cases of acute leukemia of ambiguous origin with immunophenotype similar to that of the hematopoietic stem cells (HLA-DR+/-CD34+CD38+/-), one AML with minimal differentiation features, two cases of acute leukemia with coexpression of antigens characteristic of oligolineage myeloid progenitor cells and B-cell progenitors (CD33+ / -CD13- / + CD117- / +cyCD22- / +CD19+). The latter proves the existence of multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cells common for B cells and myeloid cells. The delineation of the forms, variants and subvariants of the acute leukemias is of high importance for providing the specific therapeutic regimens.
