Тhe theoretical bases of formation of reading literacy of pupils of 5–6 classes of gymnasium in the course of studying of the Ukrainian literature are proved; revealed a low level of reading literacy of students 5-6 grades, due to lack of sustained interest in reading works of art, lack of systematic work on the literary text, superficial understanding of art as an aesthetic quality of the work, inability to use acquired subject knowledge and skills in new learning and life situations;
the high potential of artistic works of Ukrainian literature for the development of the skills of a qualified student-reader was ascertained when using special methods of analysis of literary texts (methods of developing critical thinking, game and activity strategies, interactive methods and techniques, contextual learning, information literacy, etc.);
the need to improve the professional competence of teachers in the formation of the reading literacy of schoolchildren was confirmed, which is due to the lack of substantiated theoretical foundations for the formation of the reading literacy of students; the contradictory interpretation of the conceptual apparatus, the haphazard use of interactive methods and techniques, training tasks for the development of critical and analytical thinking, the use of online tools; lack of methodological support for the formation of reading literacy of students in the process of studying Ukrainian literature;
implemented in the textbook of Ukrainian literature for 5th grade method of forming students' reading literacy, focused on the development of skills related to working with the text (find and highlight the necessary information in the text); skills based on their own reflections on what is read (understanding the facts and content of the text, the author's intention, causation, motives for actions and behavior of the characters, drawing conclusions).
