popup.description1
The purpose of scientific research is to investigate the species composition, frequency of occurrence, abundance of bryophytes and the structure of bryophyte communities on different types of substrates, the features of their distribution and morpho-functional mechanisms of resistance depending on changes in the type of forest stand, humidity and pH of the substrate, light intensity and temperature regime of localities in protected and anthropogenically modified territories, and to determine the diagnostic potential of markers of morpho-functional adaptation of bryophytes as indicators for assessing the state of forest ecosystems of the Ukrainian Roztoche.
popup.description2
It was established that epixylic bryophyte communities were clearly differentiated among forest stand types, and that their diversity on dead wood is the most sensitive indicator of the naturalness of forest ecosystems and the mosaic nature of environmental conditions. Variability in bark pH and moisture of different tree species, depending on the degree of deadwood decomposition, indicated their influence on the species structure of epixylic bryophytes as one of many factors determining successional species turnover. The significant contribution of Sphagnum mosses to productivity and carbon accumulation in mire ecosystems is conditioned by their high assimilatory phytomass and high rates of photosynthesis and chlorophyll index, which were 2.5–4 times higher than the values of other components of bryophyte communities. Turfs of the calciphilous moss Encalypta streptocarpa promoted an increase in the content of mineral nitrogen in nitrate and ammonium forms, as well as in the functional activity of free-living nitrogen fixers and ammonia-oxidizing aerobic autotrophs, whose abundance varied depending on soil microclimatic conditions and calcium concentrations at different positions of limestone outcrops.
