Variability in bark pH and moisture of different tree species, depending on the degree of deadwood decomposition, indicated their influence on the species structure of epixylic bryophytes as one of many factors determining successional species turnover. The significant contribution of Sphagnum mosses to productivity and carbon accumulation in mire ecosystems is conditioned by their high assimilatory phytomass and high rates of photosynthesis and chlorophyll index, which were 2.5–4 times higher than the values of other components of bryophyte communities. Turfs of the calciphilous moss Encalypta streptocarpa promoted an increase in the content of mineral nitrogen in nitrate and ammonium forms, as well as in the functional activity of free-living nitrogen fixers and ammonia-oxidizing aerobic autotrophs, whose abundance varied depending on soil microclimatic conditions and calcium concentrations at different positions of limestone outcrops.
