A total of 224 strains of S.flexneri and 106 strains of S.sonnei isolated in Sumy region of Ukraine during 1996-2003 years were tested to 19 antimicrobials: ampicillin (Am), tetracyclin (Te), rifampicine (Ri), chloramphenicol (Ca), streptomycin (St), fusidin (Fu), кanamycin (Кn), erythromycin (Er), carbenicillin (Cb), doxicyclin (Do), gentamycine (Ge), ofloxacin (Of), cefazolin (Cf), ciprofloxacin (Cp). High rate of resistance were found in both S.flexneri and S.sonnei to: Am (100%), Te (100%), Cb (90 and 50% respectively), Do (90 and 35% respectively), Fu (100%), Er (100%), Ri (100%), Ca (71,8 and 45% respectively), St (81 and 40% respectively). Some isolates were resistant to ftorchinolones. All examined strains except one had not hemolytical activity. 89% of shigella strains were resistant to 70oC at 45 min exposition. 30% isolates stay viability during 20 sec heating at 90oC.
