Interferon-alpha (INF) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) are known as main mediators of inflammation and cellular immune response. Elevated serum cytokine levels are found in patients with acute hepatitis. However there are contradictory data about the content of cytokines in serum of patients chronically infected with HBV and HCV. We conducted this study to evaluate the change of cytokine concentrations in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and mixed-infection (CHB+C). Circulating IFN and TNF were measured by virus-inhibition and cytotoxic and ELIS assay in 54 patients with CHB, 44 patients with CHC, 15 patients with CHB+C and 28 normal controls. Serum biologically active IFN and TNF levels were significantly elevated in all patient groups.
