The nucleus of large galaxies hosts in its core a massive- or super-massive black hole (SMBH), which may reach a mass exceeding one billion (109) times that of the Sun. These SMBH's drive the most extreme energy releases ever measured, as they shred stars and heat up their remnant gas to X- and gamma-ray levels (upwards of ~3Gev) of the electro-magnetic (EM) spectrum. The fusion of a pair of massive BHs produces large-amplitude gravitational waves (GW) of relatively low frequencies, a signature event that will soon become detectable with the European Space Agency's top-priority LISA antenna or China's future Tai Ji and Tian Qin missions. popup.nrat_date 2024-12-09 Close
