The decomposition occurs if the silicon content in the melt is smaller than that at the disilicide - tungsten- melt three-phase equilibrium. The decomposition of a disilicide layer due to selective dissolution of silicon in the melt leads to the formation of a porous, sponge tungsten layer. It was established that the characteristic sizes of the sponge structure is related to the melt composition. The description of this relationship is proposed when the decomposition rate is controlled by the diffusion transport of silicon in the melt.
