We accented on studying of the atomic and electronic structures of amorphous silicon (a-Si), carbon (a-C), silicon carbide (a-SiC), hydrogenated silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) and the (001) TiC surface, as the components of the nanocomposite films. The calculations of the atomic configuration and electronic structure of amorphous and crystallline SiC materials and TiN coatings have enabled one to understand the basic mechanisms of the inter-atomic interaction in the film materials more deeply. The theoretical results are used further for modelling sliding friction, for correcting the process of film deposition and for selecting the optimum structure of wear resistant coatings. In the experimental part of work, the reconstruction of the out-of-date PECVD system was carried out. It has allowed one to achieve the stability and reproducibility of the results. The optimum configuration of the PECVD installation for the deposition of the wide set of wear resistant coatings based on a-SiC:H and c-TiN was determined. a-SiC:H and TiN based coatings were deposited on different substrates: silicon crystallline wafers, tool materials from hard alloys and high speed steel. The structure, thickness, hardness, elastic modules, adhesion of the coatings were thoroughly studied. We have defined optimum PECVD parameters and an interrelation between them. The films deposited under optimum conditions have the best mechanical properties. We comprehensively characterize a-SiC:H films and to a lesser degree TiN coatings, since the latter will be considered in more details in the subsequent stages of work. The results of the experimental and theoretical researches were generalized in the scientific publication by Ivashchenko L.A., Porada O.K., Ivashchenko V.I., Rusakov G.V., Dub S.N., Timofeyeva I.I. "Nano-structured TiN based PECVD coatings", Proceedings of Third International Conference MEE-2004, 13-17 September, 2004, Katsiveli-tawn, Crimea, Ukraine.
