The work involved not only the heterocyclic derivatives commonly used in the chemistry of polymethine dyes but also such nontrivial systems as pseudoazulenes, substituted oxoniaboratines, pyrrolo[1,2-a]benzimidazoles, etc. The regularities revealed were applied in the development of spectral sensitizers for photosensitive materials, electroluminescence generation, laser beam modulation, and the design of fluorescent probes for biopolymers.
