Research of the following objects was performed: cracking zones and zones devoid of any cracking in composite roller samples; basis steel; fusion area; roller's working layer of high-speed steel. The influence of alloying elements in high-speed steel on mechanical, performance and processing characteristics of the rollers' working layer was determined. The abundant content in metal of such stabilizers as chromium, vanadium, molybdenum and tungsten causes formation of coarse carbide phase of various composition and morphology in built-up working layer which facilitates nucleation of micro- and macrocracks.
