There were investigated the spectroscopic properties of this material. Annealing of Al2O3:Mg crystals in a medium with the reduction potential approximately equal to -330 kj/mole was found to effectively form F2 2+(2Mg) luminescence centers with high quantum yield and luminescence maximum at 510 nm. This allows to use Al2O3:Mg,Vo crystals as an efficient fluorescent material. Two-photon ionization of the color centers at intense oprical excitations causes photochromic transformations in the crystals and the formation of new metastable optical centers.
