Alloys of the titanium-aluminium system are among such materials. Generally, these are heat-resistant light alloys, the compositions of which are within a region of intermetallic phases corresponding to compounds Ti3Al and TiAl. Ingots of titanium aluminide were produced by the methods of electroslag (ESR) and electron beam remelting (EBR) using a skull crucible fitted with a combined bottom-lateral EMP system. Chemical analysis and tests of mechanical properties of metal were carried out. They showed the values of tensile strength of specimens equal to 266.3-334.9 and 513.2 MPa, respectively. The first ingot was treated by the HIP method under the following conditions: temperature - 1160 oC, pressure - 140 MPa, and time - 5 h. No defects or pores were revealed in microsections after HIP. Tensile Gagarin specimens exhibited brittle fracture during the tests. The effect of heat treatment on structure of the titanium aluminide alloy was investigated. Part of the ingot subjected to HIP was heat treated at a temperature of 1300 oC for 2 h + 900 oC for 6 h. Structure was of the duplex type. Two other ingots were treated by HIP from 70 mm to 40 mm diameter at a speed of 1.5-1 s-1. Alloy Ti-48Al-2Nb-2Cr was subjected to plastic deformation to a total value of 41-47 %. Structure of the alloy was heterogeneous along a specimen perimeter. In addition, the alloy produced by the EBCHM method was treated by HIP. Its structure had a transverse section of 140 mm in diameter. It was cut into templates and transferred to heat treatment in vacuum furnace at 1300 oC for 2 h + 900 oC for 6 h.
