Objectives were to determine the presence and the magnitude of indirect radiation effects in blood lymphocytes of cancer patients simultaneously with the dynamics of direct cytogenetic effects induced by therapeutic irradiation long time after treatment. Methods of research and the equipment: cytogenetic analysis of cultured human lymphocytes, statistical data treatment, miсrosсopes Biolam I, Zeiss Axioskop, Micros MC 300X. Theoretical and practical results and their novelty: For the first time the clastogenic activity in blood plasma was measured and the dynamics of "bystander effect" was evaluated in human lymphocytes 1-2 years after partial-body fractionated irradiation. For the first time in Europe and in the USA the peculiarities of cytogenetic damage outcome in human lymphocytes exposed to gamma-radiation in vitro at high doses (up to 20 Gy) were established. The dose-dependent saturation of the dose response within the high dose range was quantified underlying the necessity of specific studying the certain dose ranges for correct assessment of radiation effects at chromosomal level. For the first time the reduction of the intensity of direct and indirect mutagenesis was shown, meanwhile the potential of genomic instability still existed 5-7 years after radiotherapy. Lack of normalization of patients' cytogenetic status necessitates further monitoring using an original scheme developed in our study. Applications: 4 articles, 8 abstracts in conference proceedings.
