The data were obtained about composition, structure features, and morphology of these graphites. It was shown that graphites of Ukrainian production are characterized by considerably higher graphitization rate than China-made ones and kish graphites. Chinese graphites have also considerably higher content of iron, which, to a first approximation, correlates inversely to the graphitization rate. For the samples of said graphites, deashing was carried out by different thermal and chemical methods. Initial and ash-free graphites were oxidized in different media in order to obtain expandable graphite intercalation compounds. It was ascertained that decreasing of iron content in initial graphites by way of their preliminary chemical deashing allows to heighten the quality of final products. The methods have been developed for synthesis of high-quality expandable graphite intercalation compounds both from natural flake graphites of various origins and from kish graphite separated from graphite-containing wastes of metallurgical industry.
