Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 Was determined the optimal parameters of a shielding jet of argon in narrow-gap (10-12 mm) welding of parts 110-150 mm thick, such as specific consumption of the shielding gas, argon flow rate, length of the flow-through portion of the protective nozzle etc., to provide the reliable shielding of the welding zone, tungsten electrode and cooling metal of the welded joint with the nozzles located over the surface of the parts welded. Were widening the technological capabilities of the technology for narrow-gap TIG welding of titanium developed by the E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute. The main requirement in arc welding of titanium is to ensure the reliable shielding of the welding zone, tungsten electrode and cooling weld metal. The special design of the protective device with separate regulation of flow rates of the shielding gas for the central and peripheral zones has been suggested in the course of the work. Existence of the relationship between the shielding gas (argon) consumption and content of oxygen and nitrogen in the weld metal in narrow-gap TIG welding of titanium up to 150 mm thick has been experimentally proived. The content of oxygen and nitrogen in the weld metal at an optimal consumption of the shielding gas is at a level of that of the base metal and equals 0.052 and 0.027 %, respectively.
