The goal is to lay the scholarly and methodological foundations and prepare factual material for an English-Ukrainian Dictionary of Proverbs. Methods of investigation include corpus analysis and the descriptive method. The theoretical results are a theoretical treatment of issues in phraseology and creating a conception of the dictionary. The practical result is the prepared factual material (selected proverbs and textual illustrations) for the dictionary. The novelty of the investigation lies in the use of a large language corpus to establish the currency of English proverbs and select citations from contemporary texts to illustrate their usage. The results are ready to be used at the second stage of the project and will find an application in education and science.
