A method of the synthesis of invariant manifolds is developed for the motion planning problem of underactuated mechanical systems with unstable dynamics. The existence of a function with semi-definite derivative is proved for systems whose right hand side is smooth enough, and a method for constructing the above functions is proposed. These results are applied for solving the stabilization problem and the localization of the limit set for mechanical systems with relatively compact trajectories.
