Basing on the model experiments and calculations it has been confirmed that the fatigue crack growth resistance characteristics of steels under Mode I and Mode II fracture which significant by depend on the temperature-force effect under wheels braking and the influence of operational factors (low temperature, corrosive environment) are responsible for the formation of the shell-like defects (pits and shelling). New methods for investigation of the rolling surface damaging of model spesimens of wheel-rail couple and for determination of cyclic fatigue crack growth resistance characteristics of steels under transverse shear are proposed.
