It is shown that spalling formation on the rolling surface is determined, of all by characteristic of fatigue crack grown resistance of steels, in particular, by cyclic fracture toughness. The necessity of steels choice for high-strength railway wheels by criteria of wear (wear-resistance) and pitting of their rolling surface(fatigue crack grown resistance) is substantiated. It is shown that characteristics of fatigue crack grown resistance of wheels steels under Mode I and Mode II fracture depends on the structure and strength of steels.
