It is shown that the motion direction and stopping points of this motor are dictated by the competition between the spatial and temporal asymmetry of the potential energy as well as by potential shape fluctuations. A new mechanism of directed motion is exemplified by the case when potential energy fluctuations arise due to photoexcitation of molecules under the action of resonant laser radiation. The necessary asymmetry of the potential energy can result not only from the asymmetry of the substrate potential but also from an asymmetric distribution of the fluctuating charge density in the molecule. Quantum chemical calculations show that this mechanism leads to directed motion and its possible reversal under certain conditions for concrete organic molecules (substituted phenylpyrene compounds) on a substrate with symmetric charge distribution.
