The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of employment and unemployment of the population in depressed regions of Ukraine, including coal-mining regions and proposing ways of reforming the system of employment and unemployment in these regions. Methods: in the course of work were used economic analysis and synthesis of information about the current state of development of the regions, methods of expert assessments, statistical grouping, use the software - a targeted approach, economic - mathematical, statistical and other methods of social - economic modeling and applied an integrated approach in development of strategic anti-crisis measures to reduce unemployment of the population of depressed regions, including in the coal regions. Results and novelty: methodical and analytical approach to determining the extent of depressed regions; analyzed labor market depressed regions (including coal ) and identified the causes of their depression on the basis of unemployment, a forecast volume of unemployment by region developed proposals to reduce unemployment in depressed regions, found ways of economic development priorities to ensure effective employment; developed proposals to reduce unemployment and employment in mining company towns. Industry Applications: results of scientific research are intended for use by the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, the State Employment Service, other ministries and agencies to address the reduction of unemployment in the labor market in depressed, especially in the coal regions.
