Object of research - the effect of heat treatment and radiation to change the qualitative characteristics of gemstones. The purpose of the work - to develop the concept for the identification of methods refining gems. Methods and jobs - irradiation samples, heat treatment, spectroscopic measurements. While carrying out the work were obtained new experimental data on the influence of irradiation and heat treatment as a method of refining topaz deposits of Brazil, Russia and Ukraine to replace some optical characteristics. The results of the study demonstrated that artificial color of topaz under the influence of heat treatment and irradiation is accompanied by characteristic changes in the optical absorption spectra that are not inherent to natural topaz with similar characteristics and can be identified in the laboratory by measuring the polarized optical absorption spectra with their subsequent interpretation. Work aimed at improving the expertise of the State Gemological Centre of Ukraine by identifying new instructional techniques on detection of refining gems and developing the concept for information and instrumental support of the mentioned processes.
