Object of research: primary tumor biopsies of patients on oral squamous cell carcinoma and tumor surgical material and, in some case, metastasis and recurrence of the same patients after therapy, which was preceded by surgical removal of the tumor (11 cases, оf which 6 cases, before and after therapy, men, age 50-70 years). The control group - a biopsy of the oral mucosa within the morphological rules from those who did not have cancer pathology and not smoking (10 cases, men, age 32-68 years, the material bureau forensics). Objective: in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa before and after treatment to investigate the expression of cell surface glycoprotein CD44 and intracellular isozyme of aldehyde dehydrogenase ALDH1, which are markers of epithelial stem cells, and also considered the most likely phenotype markers of cancer stem cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Methods: Histological and immunohistochemical techniques to determine the expression of the marker CD44 and ALDH1. Determined the overall histotopography and cytomorphology of tumor cells expressing markers CD44 and ALDH1, on the verge of invasive front of tumor cells and in areas of invasion of tumor cells into the submucosa, which suggests the involvement of cells with the phenotype of epithelial stem cells CD44 + and ALDH1 + in biology of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity , and namely tumor invasion and progression . In tumors of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity after the base held a combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy (drugs cisplatin, 5 - fluorouracil, etc.) on the background of different tumor response to treatment shown preservation of subpopulations of tumor cells with the phenotype of epithelial stem cells and CD44+ ALDH1+.
