Object of study - middle-aged, approaching maturity, mature and overmature oak-pine, pine-beech, beech, hornbeam-pine, oak-spruce-beech stands. Purpose of work - to study forestry and environmental bases of forestry conversion in Ukraine to selective cuttings, close to nature management system and develop the technological basis for the creation and operation of forest plantations with maximum productivity. Methods of investigation - comparative ecology, silvicultural-mensuration methods. The paper highlights the processes of natural regeneration of tree species and the formation of new stands by natural way in the case of a number of fellings other than clear cuts (uniform shelterwood felling, group selection felling, group felling, Wagner and others), and also conversion felling. Stated that in Roztochia, Stilsko Hill Ridge, the Bug-Styrskiy plain the best results concerning natural regeneration of oak-pine, pine-beech, beech, hornbeam-pine stands provide twice shelterwood felling. Such cuttings provide recovery native stands in species composition, which are close to the indigenous forests. The process of natural regeneration is most successful at high intensity of the first taking cutting and strong decrease of canopy density, especially in beech stands to 0.6, and in hornbeam-pine - even to 0,2-0,25. The mineralization of the soil surface rapidly activates the natural regeneration processes, especially in the light-trees. The number of seedlings increased tenfold. The conversion fellings by first taking with high intensity in even-aged or conditionally even-aged beech, oak-spruce-beech stands have very beneficial effect on the state of the young generation of trees, in stands clearly occurs forming of multilevel stands structure. In the surface layers of soil in middle-aged stands, that were formed naturally as a result of fellings other than clear cuts (uniform shelterwood felling and group felling) even in the absence of erosion the humus content, mobile forms of phosphorus and potassium are lower than in control stands, where felling was not performed. On the circulation of substances in forest ecosystems species composition of the litter fall is critical. The manuscript presents the implementation of the ring system of plantation forestry to obtain large stocks of wood in a relatively short period of time and reduction in felling of value native stands, ensuring balanced development of forest production.
