This is historic name of Ukrainian ethnic lands situated to the north of Carpathian Mountains and on the watersheds of the Dniester River (upper and middle stream), West Bug River (upper stream), Prut River (upper stream), and Sian River (upper stream). Its East border is the River Zbruch. Currently the territory of Galicia is divided between Ukraine and Poland. There are three regions of Galicia within Ukraine – Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil (except northern part and the cities of Kreminets and Pochaiv which were the part of Volhynian Province within Russian Empire before World War I). Poland contains three provinces of Galicia –Podkarpackie, Lubelskie and Malopolskie. From the historical point of view the name Galicia concerned only Ukrainian land but later it spread over Polish ethnic territories. The territory of Galicia within Ukrainian ethnic land embraces 55 700 square kilometers. Contemporary Galician within Ukraine covers 49.5 thousand square kilometers which is 8.2% of whole state territory. Over 5 million people (more than 10% of Ukraine’s population) live here. The aim of this work is to discover the place of Galicia in general history of Europe through the study of mutual influences in economic, political social, cultural and spiritual fields. The results of the research were used to prepare the textbook “Local History” and a number of individual articles of the Department’s scholars. The results of this research can also be used as a basis for courses of lectures and for general works in the domain of History of Western Ukraine.
