Research object: sanitary and hygienic conditions in elementary school, primary medical and educational records of two of the general education institutions (GEI), Kharkiv; health status and school adaptation of pupils of six classes (180 pupils in the dynamic learning from the 1st to the 3d elementary grades - 90 boys and 90 girls), who studied according to the pedagogical project "Intelligence of Ukraine", as well as questioning their parents and teachers. Objective: to improve school adaptation of academically gifted children in primary school by developing the system of medical and preventive measures and psychohygienic optimization of their educational activities. Methods: sanitary and hygienic, sociohygienic, physiological and hygienic, clinical, psychoeducational, and statistical. Results: hygienic problems concerning introduction of meritocratic education in primary schools are associated with certain discrepancy between the learning environment of a certain educational institution and existing sanitary and hygienic requirements, a low level of medical monitoring of pupils' health, poor organization of nutrition, impossibility to attract qualified teachers of physical training, lack of information in the teachers and parents about the evident problems of pupils in respect to school adaptation, and lack of family culture in the protection and promotion of health. Daily work-rest routine of pupils, who study in conditions of meritocratic system, is characterized by their active involvement in sports sections, balanced diet at school, passive behavior during recess, insufficient length of the night sleep and stay out of doors, as distinct from inadequate nutrition and passive recreation with mainly visual and emotional load of the pupils, who study in accordance with the traditional system of education. Overall prevalence of the morbidity has been established in children with meritocratic type of education, in comparison with those who study according to the traditional program. It has been proved that the model of learning with enrichment and problematization does not cause pathological changes in the cerebral activity. No paradoxical reaction has been observed in academically talented children at the end of the school year in 1-range, peak frequency indices during registration of background activity, as compared with the mental load, stay unchanged, and average indices of peak frequency of 2-range during mental load increase significantly less when compared with the initial period of education. Higher levels of emotional tension and activation of the sympathetic division of the vegetative nervous system in girls have been revealed in children, learning according to the innovative project "Intelligence of Ukraine" on the basis of estimating the degree of emotional tension and vegetative findings, as well as the heart rate variability analysis at the end of the school year. Analysis of daily and weekly dynamics of mental capacity has shown that children, who took part in the project, have significantly higher levels of mental capacity, regarding learning tasks scope. It has been established that purposive selection of academically talented children to first grades for innovative educational project "Intelligence of Ukraine" contributed to a higher level and better quality of their mental capacity against the background of optimal cerebral activity and lack of emotional tension, judging by vegetative characteristics. Novelty: the model of active health monitoring and development of academically talented children in the conditions of meritocratic education has been substantiated and worked out. The technology for medical and psychological support of scientific and pedagogic project "Intelligence of Ukraine" in the primary school has been designed. Effectiveness: improvement of mental performance and effectiveness of learning activities, an increase in the results of medico-prophylactic measures, and maintaining the health of schoolchildren have been demonstrated. Application fields: hygiene of children and adolescents, pediatrics, school medicine, adolescent therapy.
